Datalagringsdirektivet

Inhumane or humane

As I stroll around on the great yonder of the internet, I see a lot of usage of the terms humane/inhumane. And I wonder.

How can you inflict inhumanity towards something that's not human. Isn't it a conflict there somewhere? Can you treat, for example, a pig inhumane? How is that possible, since the pig is not human? And this keep popping up all over the web. PETA talks about it, and a found a self pronounced messiah of animal treatment, Peter Hamilton, that also uses the terms. The human race is the only mammal on the planet earth that we can use the terms humane/inhumane towards, since we are humans (Homo Sapiens in Latin), and from that the term humane or inhumane. So why do we let them trick us into using these terms on animals?? Well, from what I think, it's to gain sympathy towards the animals. Because if they only say "Let's treat the cattle better", people can't relate to the term. We would the ask; "Better than what?". So they implement the term of humane so that the readers/listeners can relate to their story. And it's no hidden secret that I despise PETA, Greenpeace, Sea Sheppard and the likes of them. Mainly because...

PETA - wants' us not to use animals for anything. But to dress themselves in plastic products that pollute a whole lot - OK. The human race has used animals for food, clothes and tools for some 100.000 years or so. Why shouldn't we still use animals for those purposes?

Greenpeace - Almost as shady as extremely religious people. Once I asked a Greenpeace activist why they opposed towards us Norwegians catching whale. And the answer was not only stupid but ridiculous. It's not a humane method of killing an animal. Then I asked the same person why they did not oppose to the bull fighting in Spain. Reply; It's a tradition that's been going on for hundreds of years. Well a news flash.. The first one to populate Norway some 10.000 years ago, caught whales along the ice. So it's a tradition for us to do so. And we do not "torture" the animal just for fun, as of what happens in Spain.

But back to humane..
Can you treat an animal inhumane? No, that's not possible. Simply because it's not a HUMAN.

Journey - LIVE in concert.

For those of you, that got me on Facebook, you had to see that I was getting ready for the concert of the year - Journey in Oslo. So I sat my ass into my car, and drove into Oslo, a one hour trip. When I entered the venue, I immediately took place alongside of the mixing console. After 15 years behind a desk, I know where, supposedly, the best sound at a concert is.

Then I heard the well known sound of Neal Schon's guitar coming through the PA system, that by the way was a D&B Audiotechnik system. And the band starts with "Never walk away". And normally the first one or two songs might not have perfect audio, since you tune the rig and do the sound check in an empty room. Wait a minute here.. Gotta do this right. Let's split this into sections of: Band, lights and sound.

The BAND:
Well, if there is a band in the world, that can break mountains before breakfast, this is it. They got three and sometimes four harmonic vocal lines. Neal Schon is THE god playing the guitar. Jonathan Cain is just terrific on the keyboard, and who else will haul a red grand piano on a world tour?? Deen Castronovo not only plays the drums like almost nobody else, but the dude can sing like an "angel" at the same time. I bow my head in pure admiration. Ross Valroy stands there like a rock solid groove guru, with his Music Man bass. And Arnel.. Arnel.. Arnel.. What can I say. Steve Perry IS the voice of Journey, sad but true. Arnel do a very good job, indeed, and then some. But sadly, he is No: 2.
And the hits just keep on coming, and sure as hell, the band got a few hits to present. "Only The Young", "Ask The Lonely", Stone In Love, "I'll be alright without you", you get the picture. Time and time again, both Arnel and Schon proves why they got their respective jobs. And I keep thinking; Damn I'm glad I'm here right now. I would have given a lot to be able to get 10 minutes with Schon, just to tell him that he IS THE god of guitar. Forget Steve Vai, Frank Gambale and Joe Satriani. Sure, they all can play fast 'n wild. But Schon does it with tone, feeling and style like no other. I would have given my soul to have hte talent he got in his left little finger in my entire body.

Character 10/10

The LIGHTS:
When I watch "Live 2001 Las Vegas" or "Live in Chile" Journey got enough lights on stage that the total power consumption could have powered up Manhattan for app 24 hours. And here they use, after what a in-house crew member told me, the in-house light equipment. Not a lot of "Pro Spot", "Pro Wash", moving heads, blinders or PAR62 lights. But he did a great job with what he had to work with. Personally I do not like white, bright tracking lights all that much, and when it's at the top four of them moving across the stage, it kinda wrecks the moods that filtered lights can provide. I can understand the reason on a 10.000+ venue, but in a venue that has a limit of 1700 people inside, it's a bit overkill. But still, I really liked his work.

Character 8/10

The SOUND:
Well, here's the Achilles heel of the evening. As I stated at the beginning the first songs might not be "all there". But sadly, it went from bad to worse. App 30 minutes from show start, the sound tech comes out, pops a handful of Aspirins' or whatever the Americans eat when they got a big headache/hangover. Shoots it down with energy drinks. That tells me that last night might not have been his best night. And really folks, that's no job you should do if you're drunk or got a severe hangover. The reason for this is the way that alcohol, if it's fresh or from last night, affects your ear. When you drink, you tend to loose focus on high pitch sounds and the same could happen if you did the same yesterday, and what came out of the speakers proved that. Ok, it could have been technical issues, working with a digital FOH mixer. But I do not think so. To my left, there's two Americans standing. And as I talk a little with them, I soon realize that this is not their first Journey concert. And from what they tell me, it's a normal thing with Journey - "relative" sound. And to make matters worse, the dude suddenly locates the main faders. And then the shit really hits the fan. Until the mid section of "Separate Ways (worlds apart)", I did not hear nor notice that the sub-woofers where working. But when Cain hits the lowest E on his Ensoniq keyboard, the floor starts dancing. And one of the earlier mentioned Americans turns to me and says; "Hell, did they just now find the main power switch to the sub amps"??. But then, as suddenly as the magic came, it was gone. the rest of the night was spent in a 6KHz and above hell. I'm not kidding, all that much, when I say that I've could have cut glass in front of the speakers. A total absence of mid-low frequencies'. No sub, what so ever.. And it's a lot of volume, estimated app 115 - 120 db.

It's not to brag about my own capabilities as a sound tech, thou more to state the obvious. If I had a Midas, Soundcraft or Allen & Heath analog console, with enough channels. Some dbx 2231 equalizer to FOH, Klark Teknik DN540 and DN530, three TC Electronic M3000 and a couple of D-Two's, I should have done a better job. And given a chance, I'll, as sure as you can hear "Amen" in a church, prove it!!! It's a damn shame.

Character I gotta put something here, but what? Well, 1/10, for the efford of showing up.
Character for his work 0.0/10.

Overall character 7/10.

Sports and "I"

Soccer or any sports at all.
Whenever there's a sports arrangement somewhere, a lot of folks gather round the TV sets to view.
Today the Champions League finale went down in Rome. And all over Facebook a lot of fans states the "we" won the finals. Well, apart from sitting on your ass, and maybe drinking some beers, whatta h**l did YOU do to make Barcelona win the finals? Actually, you did absolutely nothing, zip and nada. So why do you the post that we won? And I think it's the same all over the world, when a sport arrangement is due, Rose Bowl or what not's. And is it fair to say that any of the beer drinking, cheese doodle munching rednecks had any impact on the final result.

So why, and from where, is the "we" part coming? I really wanna know that one, and to able to understand it. Ok, I like sports almost as low as religion. So I cannot relate to any of that. But I really like music and computers. I'm a huge fan of AMD processors, ATI graphics, Fender and PRS guitars. Egopicks.com, Toto, Journey, AC/DC and so forth. But I will never use I/me in relation to any of their successes or failures. Even thou I can in fact participate in their success with buying their products. But, still using myself in relation is just to, pardon my french, dumb.

War, peace, religion and stuff Pt. 3

Hey..
Now I'm back. a new keyboard is installed, so that I can bare the fun of writing this blog. The other day at work, me and my boss got into the discussion on religion. and we do agree, religion is a lot of bogus. and during the last week or so, what happen? a Norwegian scientist may have the proof of "the missing link". So how will the followers of god now spread disbelief on the "theory of evolution"? I'm sure they'll find a way. But, it's not an option to believe or not believe the theory of evolution. you can't make that choice. And another thing.. Pope John Paul II stated once that hell does not exist. Good news for the Catholics.. Now they can use condoms and birth control without the fear of going to hell. This because. The pope is god's chosen man on the earth. And god do not make mistakes. If the pope is wrong, god is wrong.
But when the pope states that condoms do not help on the HIV/AIDS epidemic , he's oh so wrong. It does, as proven by science.
And I'm a bit worried, that a lot of the young people growing up in the US don't learn about the evolution. That the religious foundation some places are so strong that they can use the courts as their "moral" playground. And get the courts to ban the teachers from learning the kids about the truth. This all based on a book that is every bit as hard proven as the combined collection by the brothers Grimm. It's a scary thought indeed. It's just as scary as the fanatics in the middle east. So as a kick off today, I hope that the Americans can look a bit into their own country before they point their fingers at everybody else... You got a lot of religious fanatics in your homeland.

6 days offline.

Tonight, I have to say that I don’t have anything to write about. Been way to busy, and will be “offline” for 6 days, including tomorrow. But when I’m back from my time off, I’ll be exploring the dark side of religion once more. Or maybe, I’ll just post something about music.

Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep…

In outer space, satellites are linking up. Digital signals are flying around up there. One satellite is moving into position, ready to send the encoded beeps down to earth. At Fort Langley a computer is booting up from hibernation mode, and a red flashing light can be observed in the controller room. Technicians are dropping their coffee cups, as they sprint towards their stations. Then suddenly, on a 200inch monitor the words “Taliban” “al-Qaeda” and Osama Bin Laden is flashing up. The state of awareness is suddenly elevated. Tom, a 32 year old tech, shakes his head, and shouts out loud: “Somebody just Google’s Taliban. Quick track the IP address of that computer! It might be a terrorist getting ready to send information.”
Well I’m oh so sorry that I have to let Tom and the other techs down. It’s just me, doing some research for today’s blog. But as I sat here, trying to read up on the Taliban, just to spread the word of their lack in self control, another idea hit me. But I’m still waiting for my 20MB DSL line to die on itself, and 2 guys in black suits, wearing sunglasses at 10 p.m., entering the building… Flashing the Patriot Act before me, as they try to cuff me. Well FBI agents at the US embassy in Oslo, this is Norway, and not a suburb to the USA. The Patriot Act does not work here.
But as I think about this, I suddenly realize what the European Union is trying to force down on us. Just to enlighten any reader that’s not familiar with what the European Union is, I’ll try to explain it in short terms. Sometime in the early 50’s some countries here in Europe looked to the USA and thought; “Hey, that looks like a good idea. Let us copy them”. And so they did, but with a bad result. In fact the EU is sort of nothing more than a “soup council”, trying to spend as much money as they can, on nothing. And at the same time, make stupid rules, which always gain in favor of the countries that have the right to veto everything. If, and somebody forbid (hey the constitution actually do forbid) Norway was to become a member in that “soup council”, we would have 4 – four – representative in the EU parliament. Germany got 99 reps, Franc Italy and the UK got 78 each. Norway is the second riches country in the world, only succeeded by Lichtenstein, or some other small European state (also NOT in the EU). The UK is, thanks to Tony Blair’s nose far up Bush’s rear end, is almost broke. But back again to the laws. The EU is trying to enforce a law that gives the ISP the right to log what every person does on the web. This will also affect you in the way that if you download a MP3 file, the ISP will close down your DSL line. Actually ban you from gaining access to the internet. And if you download a MP3, and you get banned, the ISP is forced to give the internet log over to the police, so you can be prosecuted. If you need something extra to spice up your sexlife, you have to make sure that you are allowed to watch this on the web, or the cops will arrest you.

Seriously, who in their right minds wants this? I’m not in favor of downloading movies, games, MP3’s or any other copyrighted material. But if I have the urge to read about Taliban, al-Qaeda, Bin Laden or even read the terrorist handbook… We already got the tracking computers at Fort Langley, or where ever they are located.

So, stay safe on the web, and may the force be with you. And still 42 for ever. Will be back with another post on religion. And if anyone in the UK or USA reads this, I’m in the need for some bibles. So, if you have one to spare, send me a mail with the type of translation. For one, I need to compare with our version, so I can try to understand why they all break the last lines in the bible that states that it’s a deadly sin to add or alter this book. And then you flip the page to read all the modifications and alternations that has been done.
